These are

My Favourite portraits

These are my favourite portraits for all different reasons. Sometimes an image can have different functions. More often then not we tend to take photographs during special times in our lives. Sometimes they become more than just the recording of a moment in time. Sometimes they become significant becasue of the stories behind them. These are the images that may have a personal function which might outweigh any aesthetic consideration.

If you get an image that is beautiful with a story, you might remember that decisive moment when the shutter was pressed. An image like that, you will remember all your life.

You need to have 5 images (minimum) you have taken and a sentence or two about the work. Break it up into the IDEA and then the TECHNIQUE you have used to communicate to the audience.

Trinity

Trinity

This image of trinity is clearly endearing because of the expression on her face. She is playing to the audience and has the sparkle in her eye that would allow her to get away with anything! The lighting on her face and the details in the rest of the composition makes this image interesting & engaging.

Smile

This is a great image because of the fish interacting with the diver. The fish is 'looking' at the camera which creates visual interest. The blue background creates context but it also provides us with an amazing amount of light for this environment.

Window

Window

This moment in time is reminiscent of a bygone era. The lighting on paris' face is beautiful with her pose classic and constrained. The darkness around her is warm. Compositionally it is interesting because of her pose and careful placement of her hands.

Shelley

Shelley

The lighting of the subject is beautiful and constrained. It is an interesting image because of the technology that is trying to record whatever her focus is on. The world and immediacy of recording events is an interesting topic for us to contemplate. How much space is used up with digital information that should be deleted?

Shelley & Steve

Shelley & Steve

This image is all about time & place. It is quite beautiful because of the lighting on the central figure of the bride. it records a beautiful time of day when the light is fading outside but it has created an amazing depth of colour between the silhouetted trees. Shelley is beautifully relaxed but her expression is interested. Steve is 'chillin' because he snagged himself the most beautiful girl in the room!

Beach - Sara & Dave

Beach - Sara & Dave

This is an interesting image because of the composition. the veil that has flown over Sara's head creates a strong vertical reinforced in the repetition of these lines in the positioning of the figures with the kiss as the focal point.

Nan & Susie

Nan & Susie

This is what we look for in capturing special moments. They are hard to capture because things happen so quickly when photographing weddings. The bride looks off in the distance, the flowers strongly contrast with Nans hair and the lighting on the brides face shows here happiness and delight.

Not really a portrait?

Not really a portrait?

Or is it one?

Phoebe

Phoebe

Interesting textures, great close up of eye lashes that are to die for. beautiful even lighting and engaged subject looking directly at the photographer.

Gary

Gary

At the village in Cambodia. Great lighting, interesting positioning of flames to add context and revel the subject.

Mike & Kids

Mike & Kids

Lovely family image that records a moment in time. Hanging in the hammock, even light, dynamic and interesting composition, cute subject matter.

Hi Trinity

Hi Trinity

Greta back lighting holds visual interest in this image. The delight on her face the direct eye contact with the audience make this image engaging. The waving hand lit for emphasis creates a dynamic composition.

Indigo

Indigo

Direct eye contact and great expression makes this image endearing. The use of space around the image is interesting and well balanced with the detail of the hair in contrast to this area.

The flower is an important focal point in this photograph. The engagement with the viewer and soft lighting adds to the images appeal.

Susie

Great dynamic composition. The red flowers, and white contrast with the dark hair and eyes. Interesting angle of view with he photographer looking down on the subject. Even light that emphasises the translucent quality of her skin and beauty makes this image exceptional.
